Cambodian Wedding Ceremony

After the engagement, the marriage must take place according to the national tradition, after asking for permission, the wedding ceremony is a ceremony designed to unite men and women into a couple. In Cambodia, we newlyweds have received advice from abbots, parents and elders, relatives and friends on both sides. The advice is related to daily life to promote a happy relationship in their married life.

 

Why get married?

People have to get married for the following reasons:
- Build a family with legal, traditional and social recognition
- Create and nurture children to reproduce lineage
- Meet the biological needs of having a life partner
- Make our loved ones happy, secure, loving and emotional
- Live on your own, not dependent on your parents.

 

 

Marriage can have other reasons, but the important thing to remember is the legal cohabitation between a man and a woman. Marriage is very important because it is a sign of starting a new family life. Newlyweds have the following responsibilities:

- Maintain a happy family relationship
- Prepare and implement family planning
- Have skills to easily find a job
- Maintain and keep the house clean and hygienic
- Maintain good and understanding relationships with relatives and close friends
- Promote family health and well-being
- Respect, be responsible, understand and take care of the family at all times.

 

 

Marriage Law in Cambodia

 

Age

Age of marriage is an important issue to consider before marriage. Article 5 of the Marriage Law states that men can marry at the age of 20 and women must be at least 18 years old. The reason for this age limit is the government's strong concern for the health and well being of all citizens who want to build strong, happy families and ensure the upbringing of their children. Better.

 

Choosing a partner

Cambodia, a signatory to the International Treaty on Population and Development, Cambodia has agreed to adopt the domestic marriage law in the following articles:

1. Article 16: Declaration of Human Rights

Men and women of legal age have the right to marry and form families regardless of nationality, race or religion. They have equal rights in marriage and in marriage. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses. The family is a natural social cell, important and entitled to protection from 
society and the government.

2. Article 23: International treaties on the rights of citizens and politics

No marriage can take place without the consent and consent of both parties. Nowadays in Cambodia, although 
some families choose a partner through their parents, most of them make their own decision in choosing a 
future partner.

 

 Wedding Ceremony

Pre-arrangement

Usually, before the wedding day, Cambodians have to abide by national customs and marriage laws.
Both parents and the couple must prepare some documents to ask for permission from the local authority and organize the wedding as follows:

One birth certificate

- Certificate of Residence and Single
- Wedding Announcement
- Letter of consent from the government requesting a marriage certificate from the government and posting it publicly 10 days before the wedding day
- Prepare wedding dress and other essentials if the newlyweds have to move to another house
- Prepare guest list and invitation letter
- Find a priest and invite a monk

- Arrange to invite guests at least 5 days before the wedding
- Clean and decorate the house one or two days before the wedding.

 

 

According to Khmer tradition, the wedding ceremony is held for three days according to the following program:

Day 1
The day of the wedding is the day the bridegroom is escorted to the house built near the bride's house before being taken up to the bride's house. During the procession, there was accompaniment music.

 

Day 2 is the day on which they celebrate:

Raising Ceremony: A procession of logistics (gifts) is paraded up to the woman's house.

- Housewarming Ceremony: Food is placed in a basket and placed in a bowl as a place for offerings to the housewives.
- Ancestor ceremonies: Ancestors are prepared on both sides.

- Haircut ceremony: First, the acha prays for the gifts of the deities and sacred objects, then dedicates himself to calming the evil, and the task of cutting the hair with three scissors is placed in a box that floats in the pod. The comedian then prayed for thick scissors, a glass razor ... and sang about the jungle and the scissor lodge.

- Blessing Ceremony: Monks are invited to prosper.

- Catering for guests: It is popular to have a party at night.

 

Day 3 is the day when the following ceremonies are held:

- Foot washing ceremony for son
- Flower salute ceremony: Son uses his hand to correct the flower three times
- Veil-opening dance: Singing invites daughters to come out.
- Handcuffs or handcuffs ceremony
- Flower throwing ceremony
- Ceremony to hang the curtain into the room.
