The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is promoting the cultivation of Mon crops and raising her
worms to increase productivity, reduce imports, provide employment opportunities for farmers and promote
Cambodian silk products.
Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Crops of the General Department of Agriculture of the Ministry
of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that at present, the cultivation of Mon crops and raising her worms
is only in some provinces, including Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Takeo and Kandal. Almost completely lost.
Due to the growing demand for silk, the production rate is lower, requiring the import of silk from abroad to
supply the market.
In order to contribute to the development and preservation of valuable cultural traditions inherited from the
ancestors, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has worked hard to disseminate and train farmers on the techniques of cultivating Mon crops and raising her larvae, as well as providing Mon breeds and her
larvae. Local varieties for farmers and artisans to grow and raise in the target provinces and some provinces to
increase production.
The cultivation of Mon crops and raising her worms is first in Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Takeo and Kandal provinces, so there are four main provinces, apart from that, a little bit. Most of them are imported from abroad, China and Vietnam, so we weave in Khmer style.
In general, the Department of Agriculture used to provide mulberry trees to farmers and her larvae to the target
provinces to promote the cultivation of mulberry crops and turn to rearing her larvae to produce silk to supply
the local market, reduce imports to create jobs to increase income. "Made locally, good quality, imported,
number one, number two, made by machine, if locally made by hand."
