Cambodia is one of the largest freshwater fisheries countries in the world. Cambodia's fisheries sector includes subsistence fishing and large-scale fishing and harvesting, processing and marketing.

The fisheries sector plays an important role in the economic, food security and nutrition sectors, including freshwater, seawater and aquaculture. The Tonle Sap and Tonle Sap lakes are considered to be the richest sources of freshwater fish in the world.

Fishing in Cambodia is divided into two parts:

- Freshwater fishing: It takes place during the low tide season on lakes and waterways such as: Mekong River,
Bassac River, Tonle Sap, especially Tonle Sap Lake.

- Saltwater fishing: takes place in the Cambodian Sea of Koh Kong, Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep provinces.

From month to season, the villagers go fishing, especially near the river or sea.
